we found ourselves driving to oklahoma on christmas eve. we had waited for a break between storms..the roads were fine till we were between Walsenburg and Trinidad and it was blowing snow with icy patches. blowing snow as in just across the road not falling from the sky. but nevertheless it was scary there... and then it was all clear till i passed over Raton pass and through Raton. i got gas there and as i drove on to Clayton it was more of the same blowing snow and icy patches... i was climbing a hill and a car oncoming the other way... i hit a huge stretch of slushy ice and blowing snow and my car hydroplaned... it began to slide right down an incline towards a deep ditch.

i found myself saying "Jesus, Jesus,Jesus" about a zillion times ...then it felt like something pushed us back towards the road .. i hear fawn scream "did you see that angel" she went all quiet in the back seat, as i was still fishtailing .. i didn't brake which is what they always say to do... for a few seconds i was headed straight on at 50mph to a head on with that oncoming car. but somehow we straightened up and just went past .. after that i pulled over and sat on the edge of the road shaking for a while with fawn talking ninety miles a minute about the angel that saved us.

fawn says it was like a white flash that passed by the right side windows as the car somehow stopped sliding off the road. sort of like in bumper cars when it taps another car at a slow speed. it felt as though we just softly bumped into something that pushed us back on the road.

i wish i had seen the angel but i did feel something miraculous happen. i had no control of the car as it slid toward the ditch and i have no explanation of why it just began to go up an incline back on the road. i have no idea how at that point we didn't go head on into that car we were aimed toward either. i was just gripping the wheel in fear.

it was a miracle i have no doubt.
